Inter Milan: "The Cathedral"



The new stadium for Inter Milan, known as "The Cathedral," is being developed as a modern architectural marvel designed by the architectural studio Populous. It is a joint project initially planned with AC Milan but later evolved into separate stadium projects for the two clubs. According to Architects' Journal, "the design will include a 70,000-seat stadium alongside new officers for Inter, a sports center, a new public park and a museum shop" (Architects' Journal). Inspired by Milan's iconic Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the stadium aims to become a world-class home for the legendary club, enhancing the city's urban landscape and sporting culture.

The Cathedral is set to feature a unique seating bowl designed to bring fans closer to the action, creating an unrivaled atmosphere. Its exterior will be distinguished by a coiled viper of blue light for Internazionale, reflecting the club's identity, while the concourses will be enclosed by an elegant glass façade reminiscent of the famous Galleria, filled with food and beverage outlets that celebrate Milan's renowned food culture.

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design, with the use of photovoltaic panels on the roof for electricity generation and rainwater collection systems for reuse within the building. The project extends beyond the stadium itself, forming the centerpiece of a mixed-use masterplan that will offer new sports facilities and amenities for the community.

This ambitious project represents a significant investment in the future of both the club and the city, promising to create a new green area of over 50,000 sqm for citizens, regenerate a key urban area, and generate new job opportunities. The new district for sport and leisure aims to become a year-round destination, enhancing Milan's global competitiveness and appeal as a city of sport and entertainment​.
